It’s looking like a summer of al fresco dining at Melbourne’s restaurants and cafes, but it’s also worth getting your backyard or deck set up for the warm weather ahead.

Local furniture label Tait – which launched in a small factory in 1992 and now has sleek showrooms in Melbourne’s Fitzroy and Sydney’s Waterloo, plus an online store – specialises in well-designed outdoor pieces. It recently launched a new collection called Trace by designer Adam Goodrum, who won a Good Design award for his Scape collection and is one of Australia’s foremost industrial designers.

The Trace collection is focused on outdoor entertaining, with plenty of stylish, sturdy pieces designed to withstand the unpredictable and often harsh Australian weather.

The centrepiece is the made-to-order dining table (starting at $4895), which can be built to seat six to 14 people. It has a light aluminium frame that comes in a range of natural but vibrant colours with powder-coat finishes. There are matching nestle-away bench seats (from $2640) available in several stains (plus your choice of timber or porcelain top).

Other notable pieces include the triple-decker drinks trolley, wheeled sun lounge, and comfy armchair.

All of Tait’s furniture is handmade in Melbourne from recycled materials and sustainable timber where possible.

The online showroom, which launched while the Fitzroy flagship store was closed due to Covid-19, also includes pieces from previous collections.
