So much of a building’s success hinges on the interior design. As well as being stylish, it needs to stand up to the rigours of daily use, whether domestic or commercial.

The 2019 Australian Interior Design Awards shortlist has just been announced, celebrating the best in Australian design across residential design, residential decoration, hospitality design, installation design, public design, retail design and workplace design categories.

Victoria leads the hospitality design category with 19 nominations, including notable venues such as CBD pasta bar Pentolina, Spanish-influenced beachside spot Sebastian, tiny Yarraville finediner Navi, playful Japanese diner Future Future and modern barbeque restaurant Cheek. New cafes like Veneziano Coffee Roasters, Project281 and Bicycle Thieves also get a look-in, as does new boutique hotel United Places.

Ten venues in New South Wales are in the running, including Edition Coffee Roasters, celebrity chef Risk Stein’s luxury North Coast restaurant Bannisters, Harbord Diggers club on the Northern Beaches and rooftop Japanese bar and restaurant Saké Manly.

Brisbane’s Persone and Adelaide’s gin and whisky bar Malt & Juniper have also been acknowledged.

Beyond the hospitality industry, notable retail nominations include tranquil beachside yoga studio Warrior One and contemporary commercial retailer Stylecraft Home in Victoria, and Paramount Recreation Club (the “gym for people who don’t really like gyms”) in Surry Hills, New South Wales.
