First Look: Mornington Favourite Dreamer Opens a Second Cafe on the Peninsula

When Ben Rosenberg and Melisa Alizzi-Rosenberg opened Dreamer in Mornington three years ago, they set out to build more than a place to grab breakfast. Alongside specialty coffee and a menu of generous brunches, they created the kind of neighbourhood cafe where customers become regulars, regulars become friends and Sunday mornings stretch into afternoons with live music.
Now the pair have brought that same approach to Balnarring, opening a Dreamer outpost on the town’s main strip.
For Alizzi-Rosenberg, Balnarring’s appeal was obvious. “People know each other, support local businesses and genuinely make time for a chat,” she says. “Opening Dreamer here felt less like opening a second cafe and more like becoming part of another community.”
The move marks another step in a journey that began when the couple relocated from Melbourne to the Peninsula in 2022 in search of a slower pace and the opportunity to build a business together. Before that, Rosenberg spent four years in New York working at Australian hospitality export Bluestone Lane as it launched cafes across the city. While those experiences shaped how Dreamer operates today, he says the Peninsula has taught him a different lesson. “The best cafes aren’t just built on great coffee,” he says. “They’re built on relationships.”
The all-day menu balances returning favourites with rotating seasonal specials. Among the staples are Turkish eggs layered with pomegranate labneh, crispy chilli oil and dukkah; avocado tartine (open sandwich) finished with lemon ricotta and basil oil; and salmon tartine topped with lemon crème fraîche, capers and pickled onion.
Dreamer’s toasties – all built on Penny for Pound sourdough – have also made the move. Find chicken with avocado and mustard mayo alongside a tuna melt with jalapenos, pickles and cheddar, plus a vegetarian option filled with miso mushrooms, spinach and pesto.
Coffee comes from Mornington Peninsula roaster Commonfolk. The drinks menu also covers matcha, spiced cacao lattes, smoothies and freshly squeezed orange juice.
At the original Mornington cafe the design leans coastal, but Balnarring introduces warmer materials, with a sculptural stone counter, timber detailing, textured tiles and terracotta accents inspired by the couple’s travels through Barcelona, Los Angeles and Byron Bay.
Although the fit-out and menu have evolved, the couple says the goal remains unchanged: to create a place people want to return to, whether it’s for a quick coffee before work, breakfast with friends or simply somewhere familiar to spend an hour. After watching friendships form across tables at their first cafe, they’re hoping Dreamer Balnarring becomes another local fixture where good coffee is only part of the reason people keep coming back.
