Village Cantina has been bringing Mexican street-food to Yarraville since 2015. Its owners spent years abroad, travelling extensively through Central America while gathering recipes and influences.

With tortillas supplied by La Tortilleria, the menu provides all the usual staples. Most entrees are American-leaning, from the jalapeno poppers and chilli fries to the popular chargrilled corn topped with chipotle mayo.

For mains, quesadillas, burritos and nachos all feature, but tacos are the real star. Highlights include the carnitas pulled pork taco with grilled pineapple, and the battered fish taco. Plenty of thought has gone into the vegetarian offering too. The Baja battered cauliflower tacos are excellent, and there’s also roasted pumpkin and barbeque tofu tacos to try.

Everything pairs well with locally made Mexican-style house larger and a pale ale that incorporates corn, coriander and lime. Every other beer is a Mexican import. There’s a wide variety of Margaritas on offer, as well as sangria jugs and a small wine list.

The cantina feel is spot-on. Walls are sponge-painted a deep yellow, and candles and cacti adorn every table. The rest of the fit-out involves bunting, candelabras, Day of the Dead motifs and antique pistols. A large canvas photo of Danny Trejo overlooks it all. There’s also a small courtyard out the back, through the saloon doors.
