As a weekend destination, Canberra punches above its weight. Not only is it home to some of the country’s leading cultural institutions – including the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, and the National Museum of Australia – but it also has a swathe of cutting-edge bars, restaurants, wineries and breweries. In celebration of the National Portrait Gallery’s upcoming exhibition, Carol Jerrems: Portraits, we’re giving one lucky Broadsheet reader the opportunity to check out the offerings for themselves.

Carol Jerrems was one of Australia’s most influential photographers. This exhibition spans more than 140 of her works, providing a window into a crucial period of change in the 1970s, when women and First Nations people were striving for equality and social justice. Expect intimate, diaristic portraits of the artist’s friends, lovers and peers, as well as Black Power and women’s lib activists, and street youths – including shots from her famed series focused on Melbourne’s sharpie subculture. Gallery visitors will also get to see Vale Street (1975), the most valuable Australian photograph sold to date.

The winner will of course receive tickets to the exhibition, but that’s not all. Included in this prize pack is exclusive gallery merch like the Carol Jerrems: Portraits publication, so you can take a keepsake home with you, and a $500 dining voucher to use at acclaimed Canberra restaurants like Pilot, Onzieme, Raku, Rebel Rebel or Bar Rochford. You could use the leftover value on your voucher for breakfast the next day as well, or perhaps head to an award-winning Canberra district winery, like Nick O’Leary or Clonakilla, for lunch.

The winner will also spend the night at Midnight Hotel, a luxury stay in the buzzy inner-city suburb of Braddon, where you’ll have access to a sauna, pool and two gyms. Nothing really says “weekend getaway” like sitting back in the sauna at the end of the day.

This competition is now closed. The winner is Ian M.
