When Paramount House Hotel opens in Sydney's Surry Hills area next month, it will be the first accommodation offering from Russell Beard, Ping Jin Ng and Mark Dundon, the team behind some of Australia’s best cafes, Reuben Hills, Paramount Coffee Project and Bondi Hall in Sydney, and Melbourne’s Seven Seeds.
The hotel straddles two newly connected buildings, the Paramount House building – where the entrance and lobby of the 29-room boutique hotel will be – and the newly connected 76 Commonwealth Street building, which will house the restaurant and guest rooms. The design, by Melbourne-based Breathe Architecture, features a two-storey copper-clad roof extension and a mix of heritage details alongside contemporary updates in a modern palette of concrete, terrazzo and timber. Rooms will have Aesop toiletries and the hotel will feature a lot of greenery, including in the outdoor alcoves, which most rooms will have access too.
The equally anticipated restaurant comes from the crew behind one of Sydney's best, Ester, and will be called Poly. But guests will also be able to snack on goods in the mini bar that includes items from LP’s Quality Meats and wines by Tom Shobbrook. Arrival drinks include, among others, a sour by Marrickville’s Wildflower brewery.
Guests will also be able to draw on the building’s other tenants, including Paramount Coffee Project cafe, the art-house Golden Age Cinema and Bar and co-working hub The Office Space. A rooftop health club and outdoor garden cafe called Paramount Recreation Club will open later in 2018.
Paramount House was originally built to be the Australian headquarters of Paramount Picture Studios in the 1940s in the functionalism style, while the adjoining building was the former film-storage warehouse for the studio.
Paramount House Hotel is slated to open April 1 at 80 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills.
