Melbourne’s a beauty any day of the year – but summer is when it truly shines. Hot and sunny during the day, and comfortably warm at night, summer in the city is ideal for exploring markets, bayside beaches, parks and outdoor dining. And honestly, even the odd cool day in between is fine – it’s just an excuse to spend a day doing some indoor activities.

With that in mind, we’ve put together some top options for anyone spending a whirlwind weekend in Melbourne this season. As the city comes alive in the summer, here’s how the locals love to spend some time.

Catch a show

There’s a reason Melbourne is known as the culture capital of Australia – the city is bursting with entertainment. There’s no shortage of nightlife options, but Melbourne’s historic East End Theatre District in the CBD is a great place to start. This summer, you’ll find shows like Broadway musical Anastasia (at the Regent Theatre), The Book of Mormon (starting February at the Princess Theatre) and the Michael Jackson-themed MJ the Musical (at Her Majesty’s Theatre). The theatre season runs all year, of course, but summer means the chance for pre-show al fresco drinks and a late supper while the evening is still warm.

Al fresco dining and waterfront bars

Speaking of al fresco, the city is teeming with streetside diners and leafy courtyards that are perfect for the warm weather. When the sun is shining, head for spots like cafe and wine bar Napier Quarter’s quiet corner in the Fitzroy backstreets (the wine selection is one of Melbourne’s best), or Yarra River-adjacent Afloat, a seasonal bar going for a Rio theme this year.

Summer is obviously for seaside dining too, so we recommend a piece of battered fish and some crispy chips from somewhere like Pipis Kiosk in Albert Park and grabbing a prime spot to watch the sun set over the bay.

Head to the beaches, parks and gardens

The best things in life are free – including those grassy, sandy spaces all over Melbourne that are perfect for summer. Swimmable beaches stretch from Port Melbourne all the way around the bay so you can really take your pick, but you don’t need to go far for a dip. St Kilda is popular in the summer, of course, and flanked by breezy bars like Captain Baxter, but if the bustle is too much, it can be worth heading a little further to suburbs like Sandringham or Black Rock.

On the green side, take your pick of parks and gardens for a stroll and a picnic. If learning about the natural world is your thing, the Royal Botanic Gardens is divided into botanical themes – the succulent and cacti garden Guilfoyle's Volcano is worth checking out – while the sprawling inner-suburban bush of Yarra Bend Park houses the city’s resident bat population, which can be seen snoozing during the day out near Fairfield Park Boathouse.

Stroll through a night market

If daytime walking is for gardens and parks, night-time is for the city’s summer markets. The biggest is definitely the Summer Night Market at Queen Victoria Market, a combination of live music, crafts and street food that runs for the whole warm season from late November until early March 2026.

Stay at a hotel in the heart of it all

If you’re just visiting Melbourne for the weekend, you’ll want to stay somewhere close to all the action. Sheraton Melbourne Hotel in the East End is close to theatres, Treasury Gardens, and all the excellent restaurants on Flinders Lane. The city view rooms offer unique glimpses downtown, and you’re spoilt for choice with a restaurant downstairs and terrace bar upstairs.

Or for a stay with harbour views, there’s Melbourne Marriott Docklands, with rooms that draw inspiration from the city’s bluestone architecture. The pièce de résistance is a 28-metre outdoor infinity pool on the rooftop – perfect for cooling down on those hot summer days.
