There’s no need to plan too tightly when there’s so much to do in the Yarra Valley. In partnership with Chandon, we’ve put together some itinerary suggestions for a chill afternoon out of the city, capped off with a quiet glass rosé overlooking some stunning vineyards.

We’re so lucky here in Melbourne. Between the city’s culture, its food and drink scene, and the distinct character of each neighbourhood, there’s plenty to keep us busy close to home. Still, sometimes it’s nice to step away from the bustle – which is why having the Yarra Valley on our doorstep feels like such a gift.

Sunday afternoons are the perfect time to take a drive out of the city. In less than an hour, the urban sprawl gives way to rolling hills, dense greenery and long vineyard views. It’s the kind of trip that never feels like an effort – and with so much to see and do, there’s no need to plan too rigidly. With that in mind, here are five of our favourite Yarra Valley spots for those Sunday afternoon escapes.

Chandon

The Yarra Valley is known for its wine, and Chandon is a much-loved stop for a relaxed Sunday visit. In February and March, the venue leans into a slower pace, with Rosé Sundays – inspired by rosé hour, the final stretch of the weekend when the vineyard fills with late-afternoon light and visitors settle in for a glass. On Sundays, guests can order a glass of rosé at a special price or opt for the $49 tasting experience, which pairs a selection of sparkling rosés with light, afternoon tea-style snacks. It begins with Ancestrale Rosé alongside a lobster roll, followed by Vintage Brut Rosé with a duck croquette.

The format suits an unhurried visit and works equally well as a first stop or a final pause before heading back to the city. The experience concludes with a Chandon Rosé icy pole, a seasonal finish that adds a sense of playfulness and occasion.

Warrawilla rainforest walk

The temperate rainforests of the Yarra Valley make spectacular spots for some relaxed exploring, packed as they are with towering tree ferns and southern sassafras. You could easily spend a day hiking the trails of Toolangi State Forest, but for a casual Sunday afternoon, the Warrawilla rainforest walk is perfect. The mostly boardwalk trail is an accessible 700-metre return and takes around half an hour, making it a gentle way to stretch your legs and take in the Valley’s natural beauty before moving on.

Four Pillars

Healesville gin institution Four Pillars has been drawing the crowds for over a decade with the promise of inventive spirits and gin-friendly snacks. Since the distillery’s massive upgrade a few years ago, things have only got better for Yarra Valley daytrippers, with the botanical-filled venue now boasting extra bars and an upgraded production capacity. Gin is the main event – from tasting paddles to house cocktails – but there’s plenty to enjoy even if you’re not drinking, particularly from the Tuck Shop, which turns out treats like Bloody Shiraz Gin pâté and fried mortadella toasties.

Tarrawarra Museum of Art

Melbourne has no shortage of galleries, but Tarrawarra Museum of Art offers something different. Perched at the top of a hill, the architecturally adventurous gallery building takes in panoramic views of the surrounding Yarra Valley that are truly worth the trip – and that’s all before you even make it inside. The museum itself is home to a fabulous collection featuring works from legends like Howard Arkley and Charles Blackman alongside contemporary artists. Definitely worth a wander on a Sunday afternoon.

Alowyn Gardens

Yarra Glen’s Alowyn Gardens is a sprawling series of landscaped gardens set across seven acres. Each of the seven gardens has its own character and style, shifting and changing with the seasons. In summer, expect towering sunflowers, swaying kangaroo paws and beds alive with colour.
