Som Tam

11:30am - 3:00pm
5:30pm - 10:00pm
750 High Street Thornbury

Next door to art bookshop Perimeter Books on High Street in Thornbury is small Thai restaurant, Som Tam.

A modest space with exposed brick, two-seater wooden tables and red lamps over head, Som Tam is one of few Asian eateries in the stretch of High Street before you hit the mother load up in Preston.

Service is efficient and welcoming. The menu offers traditional Thai favourites – rice and noodle dishes, stir-fries, curries and fish dishes – alongside some more unusual options. Start with a son-in-law egg (one per person) – a silky egg fried in chilli and caramelised onion dipped in a herb relish.

Then move on to the real winners, which include the Som Tam salad (the signature dish – a zingy salad of shredded papaya, carrot and green beans), the Ocean Envy (prawns, calamari, scallops, butter chilli paste, chilli jam, cashew nuts, broccoli and spring onion) and a hot jungle curry (of king prawns, snake beans, krachai and green pepper corns).

And you can’t go past a simple and traditional pad Thai with Jantaburee stick rice noodles. For dessert try the banana roti.

This is easy, family friendly, reasonably priced mid-week dining.
