Amarok Bar & Restaurant
Fairly or no, Southbank has a reputation of being aimed squarely at the tourist market. That said, there are a number spots luring in locals; Amarok is one of them. Purportedly serving native North American, Canadian and Inuit cuisine, it’s really modern Australian with a North American bent. A salmon cured with lime is served with chilli coconut cream and pomegranate and blistered orange zest, and a beef carpaccio comes with juniper, crushed nut and wild beet. There’s also a selection of larger dishes: a chicken roasted in Sierra Nevada stout, pine needles and acorns, or a feast board that lets you sample them all.
Specialty brews from the lively American beer culture are available by the bottle, with unusual variations on Sierra Nevada, including a kellerweis and a stout, and a Rogue’s Pale Ale brewed with juniper. For the beer-averse, cocktails are on offer, all with an Inuit theme.
And, you’ve got to admit, sitting next to the stone fire and looking back out over the Yarra and into the city, Amarok is in a pretty great spot.
