Steer Dining Room, a New York–style steakhouse, moved from its former home at the base of the Olsen Hotel in mid-2015. Dark curtains and carpet in the main dining area give way to an open kitchen down one side with a space for bar dining. Towards the front, a more casual bar area houses walk-ins or those after a drink and a snack.

The menu is heavy with Japanese and South-East Asian influences. Oysters might come “Kyoto style” with tobiko (fish roe) and shiso-leaf kewpie in a light kombu pickle; and you can choose from three different cuts of meat for your tataki.

Steak is the main event. Choose from grain- or pasture-fed beef first, and then scour the list of producers, cuts and scores to find the perfect steak from almost 30 options. It’ll be presented for you to confirm before it’s cooked.

Non-beef-eaters can choose from a vegetarian pasta dish, fish or another protein, such as Aylesbury duck. A range of sides (thick-cut chips, potato mash, corn) and salads (wilted greens, panzanella) is also available.

The short list of desserts includes roasted pineapple with white chocolate mousse; and chocolate brownie with peanut sorbet. There’s also a solid, extensive wine list, a range of beer and cider, and classic cocktails.
