The entry to Wingnut & Co.’s new home is unassuming. Founders Asuka Mew and Anna Miller-Yeaman live upstairs and make their wares in the studios below, which now has an added shopfront. Downstairs, it has everything you’d expect two graduates from the VCA to make – that is, tactile ceramics with an artistic sensibility. Though with the concentration of independent, bespoke design practices in Melbourne, you have to wonder what makes these guys different. In their case, a Japanese aesthetic is mixed with timber and brass to create tableware echoing subdued elegance spanning plant pots, beer cups and milk jugs. With Mew being a furniture maker at Pierre and Charlotte and Miller-Yeaman an artist in her own right, this makes for some interesting conversation when you pop in – and don’t forget to pat the resident store cat, Machi.
Wingnut & Co. is open every second Saturday of the month. Check the website for details.
