Strangeworld Records is hidden behind The Standard Hotel in the back streets of Fitzroy. There’s no signage outside, and little more than a record protruding from the roller door to help you find it.
It feels more like a living room than a store; complete with blue carpet, black armchairs and hanging artwork. Though you’ll find something from almost every genre, there’s a particular focus on punk, metal and garage.
Strangeworld’s collection of post-punk and noise records, sourced both locally and overseas, is one of Melbourne’s most comprehensive. Owner Richie Ramone (yes, he has the same name as the former drummer for The Ramones) stocks thousands of esoteric releases – including those from his own label, Homeless.
Shipments of new and second-hand music arrive weekly. Vinyl aside, you’ll also find a good selection of cassettes, CDs, shirts and magazines for sale.
If you can’t drop in, check out Strangeworld’s online store. Postage is free anywhere in the country for orders over $100.
We do not seek or accept payment from the cafes, restaurants, bars and shops listed in the Directory – inclusion is at our discretion. Venue profiles are written by independent freelancers paid by Broadsheet.
