You need a private appointment to gain entry to this unique clothing studio, hidden away in the heart of Elwood. Paris '99 specialises in new and pre-loved garments sourced from international designers such as Balenciaga, Lanvin and Dries Van Noten. It offers customers a salon-style experience reminiscent of Couture houses of a former era.
This spacious studio is situated on the first floor of an art deco-style apartment that overlooks the Ormond Road cafes and shops. Unless in on the secret, you’d never find it through iron gates, down a lane way and up a flight of winding timber stairs.
Paris '99 is the brainchild of Yahav Ron, an RMIT fashion graduate and designer who is overflowing with personality, style and a passion for matching customers with precisely the right garment. “Shopping for clothes should be fun – it’s like dress-ups,” he says, bubbling with enthusiasm. He’s happy to consult over a glass of champagne or a decadent afternoon tea.
The studio carries women’s clothing, shoes and accessories, discounted 80 to 90 per cent from the original retail price. Some garments are truly eye-popping, such as a seamless gold-panelled Hollywood gown and a tailored jacket lined with wetsuit material.
