Minh Phat Supermarket
Minh Phat is brimming with goods from Southeast Asia (particularly Vietnam), China and Japan. Just off Victoria Street, it opened back in 1988 – making it one of Melbourne's most established Asian supermarkets. But this flagship actually started life as an offshoot of the now-closed original shop opposite the Queen Victoria Market in the CBD, which opened in 1979.
It's difficult to summarise Minh Phat's offering – it's just too vast and diverse. Think a whole aisle of tea, from delicate flowers to health-focused powders; another aisle dedicated purely to herbs and spices; strainers, stockpots, claypots, knives and crockery; tea-tree mushrooms, shrimp skins, Barwon flowers, Japanese seaweed, duck eggs and an ocean of canned fish. That's just scratching the surface of what you can find here.
