LOTT Studio and Maekar are the fine jewellery labels of small-scale silversmiths Kari Layton and Sarah Gibson, respectively.

Having shared a studio space in the past, and acknowledging their similar focus on materials and sustainability, Layton and Gibson joined forces to open the store and workshop in December 2015. A visit presents the opportunity to see how each piece is made – a rare experience for the slow-fashion-minded consumer.

The duo regard jewellery as an investment, producing timeless, classic designs made from high-quality materials. Both work exclusively with solid metals – sterling silver, nine-carat yellow and rose gold, and the occasional gemstone.

The aesthetic of each designer complements the other. Gibson’s androgynous pieces are geometric, the sharp lines and angles drawing on her interior design background. Layton’s work is delicate and textured. She previously worked as a product developer in the fashion industry, as well as freelance buyer and trend reporter. Slowly she found herself drawn to the works of artisans and independent industrial designers, and made the switch to jewellery.

Rather than producing seasonal collections, the duo focuses on small drops throughout the year, along with custom pieces and wedding commissions.
