Footscray Olympic Doughnuts might be the only doughnut caravan in Melbourne with its own fan page. The tiny business was established in 1979 by World War II baby and Greek immigrant Nick Tsiligiris, who runs it to this day.
He outlasted his original rusted and graffitied caravan – it retired in 2014, coinciding with the multibillion-dollar redevelopment of Footscray Station. Tsiligiris now works in a purpose-built hut outside the station, which sadly lacks the old-school charm of his former lodgings. He even kissed goodbye to the upside-down Olympic rings that used to sit above its window.
Thankfully, the iconic dolphin still sits on the counter, its hollow nose pumping hot jam into doughnut after doughnut. It was handcrafted by one of Tsiligiris’ friends at the very beginning, and every regular has their own name for it.
It’s hard to believe, but even after all these years the lumpy, fist-sized balls of dough are still just 80 cents each. Customers love sharing their moments with the affordable sugary treats on the fan page. One guy even travels from Geelong just to get his fix.
