Features
Just like the taquerias in Mexico City, you’ll only find Taqueria Sin Nombre if you’re really looking, or really lucky. The restaurant – from the team behind beloved food truck Dingo Ate My Taco – has almost no outside signage and is practically hidden off a Chinatown laneway.
The menu strives for similar authenticity. The kitchen uses a small tortilla machine imported from Mexico to roll out warm discs of masa.
The star is the al pastor: hand-sliced pork shoulder marinated in pineapple juice and spices, topped with pickled pineapple, white onion and coriander.
Other favourites include the birria tacos and kangaroo asada marinated in orange, garlic and Mexican oregano.
Plus, there’s a separate vegan menu without any fake meats. Grilled mushrooms and even caramelised hibiscus flowers show off the kitchen’s creativity and skill.
At the salsa bar, everything is made by hand. A bright green salsa is the house staple, while specials rotate seasonally.
The drinks list features a handful of mezcals, cocktails and three carefully chosen beers: Sol, Negro Modelo and Melbourne Bitter.
Vinyl plays and the lighting is moody – an energy pulled straight from Mexico City at midnight – and the long terracotta tiled counter seats you directly at the pass.
