Son in Law
Melbourne is saturated with Thai restaurants. Recognising this, Son in Law does its best to offer something different. Its four Thai owners founded Ayatana on Chapel Street and ran it for three years before moving north side in mid-2015.
Son in Law is larger and more casual, to entice a younger crowd. To this end the space, which previously housed the Middle Eastern restaurant Bayte, was given a very light update with the help of BrandWorks and now pops with fluoro stools and dado walls.
But really it’s the menu that appeals to the new school. On the front page there’s a highlights section that carries over the most popular dishes from Ayatana’s ultra-modern menu. It includes fish pattie sliders with kewpie mayo; a texture-rich tamarind salad; and beef tacos.
The drinks menu has enough good local beers and spicy/fruity cocktails to make this a good option for starting a night out. The wine list rounds up names such as Jim Barry and Henschke to put it beyond doubt Son in Law isn’t your usual Thai restaurant.
All that said, the bulk of the menu is traditional, so those with a hankering for pad thai, massaman curry or tom yum soup needn’t look elsewhere.
