Mr Umami’s originally occupied a small space to the side of a larger pub. It was so popular, it took over the whole site. Now, owners Grant and Kimberley Ryan take pride in introducing would-be pub-goers to the flavours of Asia.

In particular, the couple take pride in the kitchen’s from-scratch approach. Everything – including dumplings, curry pastes and sauces – is hand-made every day. If dumplings aren’t your thing, other favourites include their duck dishes and sashimi. The menu has doubled since its days in the side room, offering plenty of options, all designed to share.

The cocktail list is fun and theatrical, with all the cocktail jugs served in teapots. There are also tap beers and plenty of affordable wines. This is key on Saturday nights, when an RnB DJ brings the party vibe and you’ll feel like sticking around for a few extra drinks.

The fit-out of the venue is fresh, bright and airy – the design revolves around the timber bar and a big, backlit logo. The restaurant winds through a few separate spaces, including a 12-seat private dining room. An outdoor deck is perfect for people-watching on lazy Sundays.
