Features
Low-key Lulu’s is a diner and burger joint from the team behind Heartswood which sits just across the road. Owner Matt Binney (former head chef at now-closed fine diner Merricote) and his partner Bianca Leach wanted to create a new local classic with their straightforward approach to American-style burgers and all things deep-fried, crispy and golden.
Lulu’s offers its name to the classic burger on its menu: a fluffy milk bun stacked with a double Angus smash patty, double bacon, cheese and all the usual trimmings. Fried chicken comes in two varieties: Nashville-style chook slathered with hot sauce and butter, served on a buttermilk waffle; and Korean fried chicken glazed with gochujang and ginger. Sides include mac’n’cheese croquettes.
Binney and Leach wanted to create a restaurant that would be complementary to what they do at Heartswood. But there’s also a bit of a crossover – all the wine at Lulu’s pulls from Heartswood’s extensive cellar.
While Lulu’s focuses on takeaway, there are also 22 outdoor seats, plus comfy indoor booths and stools at the bar – where a vibrant mural by local artist Juzpop is the hero.
