The Horn African Cafe & Restaurant
Peter Harper, a saxophonist, and his wife Enushu, a singer and chef, have brought a point of difference to Johnston Street since opening The Horn in 2007. Built on the foundations of solid, authentic Ethiopian cuisine and live music, The Horn has established itself as a leading, northside Ethio-eatery.
With live music performances (including residencies) from Thursday to Sunday, owners Peter and Enushu also routinely trade their aprons for a place on the stage with their Ethiopian jazz, funk, hip-hop ensemble, The Black Jesus Experience. It’s the sort of place you’ll find first-timers, regular locals and even Ethio-jazz godfather Mulatu Astatke hanging when next in town.
The favourites, Ethiopian red stew (Kye Wot) and lamb ribs fried with green chillies, are worth waiting for - not that you usually have to. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and organic options are all available. There’s a courtyard out the back, a diverse range of African beers to swig, and organic, single-blend Sidamo Ethiopian Coffee for a pep. Group and party bookings are popular as are traditional Ethiopian Coffee ceremonies.
