Franco Choo’s Italian
What was a takeaway sandwich shop in Prahran is now Franco Choo’s, a small restaurant with about 20 seats. The place has a happy, bustling vibe almost every night.
Owner and chef Steven Choo was a landscape architect, but his love of cooking distracted him to the point that he ended up spending years working in kitchens, then studying a commercial cookery course. The restaurant is a mash-up of his name and that of his Italian partner, Franco.
Franco Choo’s is very definite in what it offers. The menu changes monthly, but always contains at least two entrees, two mains and two desserts. In true trattoria fashion, it's all scribbled on a blackboard. Expect pastas, market fish and other rustic, regional Italian-style dishes served on pretty patterned plates.
The wine list is a treat of Italian wines and Mediterranean varietals from Victoria, so sip on a sangratino, sangiovese or vermentino while you sit in the small room designed by Patrick Meneguzzi Interiors. They’ve given the place an earthy, approachable charm that follows Choo’s brief.
