Steak frites. Steak and fries. Steak and chips. However you want to say it, it’s a classic with an appeal that transcends season, fashion and geography.
At Jason M Jones’ (The Stables of Como, Friends of Mine) Entrecôte the brief is simple: grilled, grass-fed Black Angus Porterhouse with house sauce, vinaigrette-laced green salad and bottomless fries. It works so well, he’s replicated the concept in the CBD.
South Yarra is an approachable, unstuffy bistro scattered with vintage light fittings, potted palms and burgundy velvet banquettes. Arrive before noon for the plus que passable breakfast menu, which features croissants and pain au chocolate, croque-monsieur, Golden Folded Eggs and French toast.
For those not averse to an early steak, there’s a hefty Petit Déjeuner du Fermier, with minute porterhouse, house sausage, bacon, sunny eggs, relish and grain toast. Post-Tan latte lovers can get their fix from the little takeaway window on Millswyn Street, which offers $3 coffees all day, every day.
After midday there’s a tight selection of classic hors d’oeuvres, including chicken-liver parfait; escargot in garlic butter; and onion soup. But really, you’re here for that steak frites, a dish which pretty much demands a decent glass of red. As you’d expect, there’s plenty of bottles from France, with a smaller selection of local bottles.
