The opening of Bistra in Carlton earlier this year marked the beginning of a resurgence of old-school European-style bistros in Melbourne. Now, brother-and-sister duo Adam and Elisa Mariani are continuing the trend by opening Elio’s Place, a European-inspired bistro on Flinders Lane named for their father.

The new venue is located in Flinders House, a palazzo-style building that dates back to the 1860s, opposite Duke’s Coffee Roasters and just across from Brunetti Oro. The fit-out at Elio’s Place was overseen by Studio Co & Co (Pizza Pizza Pizza, The Sporting Club Hotel).

It’s the fifth venue from the Mariani siblings. The pair are also behind Greta, a schmick sandwich and wine bar at the western end of Flinders Lane, and Maverick, a cafe in the 80 Collins dining precinct. The Marianis also helmed the now-closed spots Mayday in Richmond and Petty Officer in Albert Park.

Executive chef Gareth Flood, who has worked alongside the Marianis for six years at Greta, Maverick and Mayday, oversees the all-day menu at Elio’s, drawing influence from Italian, Spanish, French and British traditions. There are sweet and savoury breakfast options, made-to-order sandwiches, aperitivo hour from 3pm to 5pm daily and share plates available at lunch and dinner.
