After months of keeping things under wraps, Andrew McConnell and Jo McGann have released details on their restaurant in the former Becco site on Crossley Street in the Melbourne CBD.

The name is Côte Basque, there’s room for 100 keen diners inside and it’s a European grill inspired by the Basque coast.

“The name references our love of Basque culture and the coastline that bridges the northern Basque region of Spain and the southwest of France. The raw beauty of the region and a bounty of benchmark produce have long been an inspiration for us,” McConnell said in a statement. “The tradition of wood fired cooking that defines this region will be central to the menu and influence not only what we cook, but how we cook.”

The interior, designed by Vince Alafaci and Caroline Choker of ACME, will match the building’s mid-century architecture and pay homage to its time Becco. Original features including the green terrazzo floor and stepped dining room will be retained. Outdoor dining will be added and there’ll be private dining upstairs.

Côte Basque will open in winter 2026.
