Pizza and beer, they’re like the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of the food and beverage world. While both are undeniably great on their own, put the two together and you’ve got an alchemical event on your hands. But this is no flight of fancy. It seems Melburnians have been rather fond of the beer and pizza combination for years. But its popularity shows that the guys behind Bar Fred are on to a good thing.
As such, Bar Fred can get pretty busy, so it pays to be prepared for a wait for a table. The beer list here is huge and you’ll be spoilt for choice with a variety of local and foreign beers. The pizza is simple, thin and extremely well priced. The decor is a fine example of this city’s bar chic – a bit of grunge, a bit of grandma and a bit of seventies European sprinkled over the top for good measure.
You might hear the web echoing with some faint grizzles about staff attitudes, but best find out for yourself. The crowd is usually young and fresh-faced; you might even find a fine foxtrot partner to help you work off your dinner.
