Features
Open since 1976, Dakota 501 has seen a lot of change on Chapel Street. Offering a select range of men’s and women’s denim and casual wear, it’s found a formula that works.
Housed in a heritage-listed building, the new fit-out (the shop moved from the South Yarra end of Chapel Street – where it had been for 39 years – to Windsor) has simply highlighted the pre-existing character of the space, including the high ceilings, interior brick walls and exposed loft-veranda.
Dakota 501 specialises in denim for men and women (Dr Denim, Levis, Nudie Jeans Co.) and stocks established street-wear labels such as Carhartt, Mr Simple, Fred Perry, L’America, Vanishing Elephant and lingerie label Lonely Hearts. Shoes, dresses accessories and shirts are all in store, but it is the denim that is the main event.
