Oaktree Lodge is situated in quaint Rhyll, just moments by car from Phillip Island’s main hub, Cowes. Owners Sue and Anthony Webber first bought the property in 2013 but, before they even picked up a paint roller, it was already brimming with undeniable country character.

Since then, the pair have transformed what was once a single residence into three one-bedroom apartments (The Oakleaf Suite, The Boathouse Suite and The Acorn studio) in addition to a standalone suite at the edge of the property, aptly-named The Gatehouse Cottage.

Inside each space, you’ll be met with some stately interiors designed by Anthony, who amazingly, doesn’t boast a background in the trade. All rooms are punctuated by impeccable modern Australian stylings – timber cladding, stained glass windows and, with the exception of the Acorn studio, a cast-iron fireplace for Phillip Island’s chilly winter evenings (firewood is supplied on request). But whichever room you choose, there’s ample heating and air-conditioning year-round.

Pantries come fully stocked with free-range local eggs, bacon and artisanal goods to fire up a country-style breakfast on the communal barbeque outside. For every other meal of the day, Rhyll’s town centre and the best of Cowes is close at hand.

Oaktree Lodge is most popular in the summer months, among the surfing set who take advantage of the swell at Cowes’ beach, and Melbournites in need of a slow-escape. Be sure to book well in advance if you’re aiming for the Christmas holidays.
