Features
Terra Madre has come a long way since the 1980s. It started as a small stall in the foyer of the neighbouring Westgarth Cinema before moving to its current shopfront. Until a renovation in 2012, it even had a different name: the Fruit Pedallers.
It’s become one of Melbourne’s favourite organic and wholefood grocers. Owner Sam McGinley inherited the business from his mum, Cath McGinley, who ran it out of the cinema all those years ago. He operates it with his friend Ryan O’Connor.
The building’s original brick walls and pressed metal ceilings are still intact. It’s not the biggest space, but you can easily do your whole week’s grocery shopping here.
Terra Madre’s nooks and crannies are packed with fresh veggies, grains and deli goods. Its suppliers are based both locally and interstate. They include Loving Earth; Belmore Meats; Pana Chocolate; Zeally Bay Breads; and Peace, Love and Vegetables.
A wellness clinic sits upstairs, which hosts acupuncturists, massage therapists and naturopaths. An array of natural haircare and skincare products, vitamins and herbal mixes is also for sale.
