Better late than never, Feast of Merit’s new rooftop bar opened early this week on the first day of autumn.
“Since the start we’ve wanted to go upstairs,” says owner and YGAP founder, Elliot Costello. “But we wanted to make sure it worked. We had to get the funding and the timing right.”
The two-year-old restaurant’s new space features a retractable roof to keep the sun in and the autumn chill out. A Middle Eastern snack-food menu complements the downstairs menu. Spiced organic almonds with chickpeas is an option from the vegetarian-friendly list.

There is wine from Yarra Valley, beer from Coopers and Quiet Deeds and a brand-new cocktail menu. Costello recommends the Moscow Mule – vodka, spicy ginger beer and lime juice.
The intimate space holds 30 people. The decor involves a few plants, some vintage props (an old gate from the MCG) and some local art. Just like downstairs, all profits go to local entrepreneurs for YGAP, a charity that supports youth education and leadership projects in Australia, East Africa, South Africa and the Pacific.
