Lost & Found Hotel Room is an initiative of Tourism Victoria to flaunt what’s great about Melbourne, and it returns this year. The hotel is nestled atop cafe-cum-gentleman’s-outfitter Captains of Industry on Somerset Place. Architects Six Degrees (Auction Rooms, Ponyfish Island) and designer Jonathan Zawada have worked with Right Angle Studio and Tourism Victoria to create the space. As Mark Healy from Six Degrees says, “This is a great project for showcasing the creativity that Melbourne is renowned for and is important in highlighting the talent of local designers, artisans and producers.”

Although the apartment is temporary, it couldn’t be more polished. The light-filled warehouse studio is furnished with pieces from Daniel Barbera, Grandfather’s Axe and DeDeCe. There are floor rugs from ffiXXed, skincare from Aesop, glassware from Plumm and artwork from Melbourne gallery Utopian Slumps.

Guests are met on arrival by Lost & Found’s Cultural Concierge, who will show them to their room and can guide visitors on what to explore in surrounding city laneways, providing insider tips on Melbourne. The concierge may also be a well-informed writer of the the Lost & Found publication, so they know a thing or two about the city and can also pull a few strings with regard to doorlists and reservations. And if guests happen to meet up with friends along the way, there’s plenty of room to bring them back to stay too.

“I really like the layout of the bedroom area that features a circular surrounding curtain within the studio space,” says Mark. “Also, each object in the room tells a story and we've designed the space so that people can have friends over. For example the lounge can hold up to eight people if need be.”

All this, and not a big hotel bill to sign at check out.
