Convoy sits on a sprawling corner site in Moonee Ponds. The 140-seat neighbourhood cafe comes from the team behind Terror Twilight and Hi Fi in Collingwood, and Tinker in Northcote.

The menu strays from the usual cafe fare. Expect fluffy cinnamon-scroll pancakes, a curried-scrambled-egg brekkie muffin, and a king prawn roll on a potato bun, slathered with kewpie and tabasco. The impressive steak-frites roll has sliced rump and rich bone marrow gravy, while there’s also a Japanese okonomiyaki-inspired waffle topped with a fried egg.

The fit-out (by Studio Esteta and My Friend Tom) has warm timber, chunky marble benchtops and stone tiling throughout. There are also plenty of private nooks, corner tables and an airy wraparound deck – with brick retaining walls, lush garden beds and room for 75 people, it’s ideal for group brunching. The takeaway window, right across from Queens Park, is handy for grabbing a quick coffee.
