Yes, Mr Ed is named after the famous talking horse who dominated televisions during the ‘60s. It’s a good fit – the cafe is just down the road from Flemington Racecourse.
Since 2014, owners Nick Neocleous and chef Rohan Green have been providing fresh, healthy-ish food with a focus on using in-season fruit and veg.
The menu includes dishes such as brioche French toast with poached pear, lemon crumble, vanilla mascarpone and blackberry dust; and house-smoked salmon with tomato, shallot and basil fry, sumac-rolled eggs and goats curd on sourdough.
For something a bit different, try the fried hash made of kipflers, purple congos, kassler (smoked pork ribs), shallots, cherry tomatoes, soft fried egg, pea puree and aged cheddar; or the soft-shell crab burger with confit tomatoes, red slaw, watercress, chilli mayo and burnt capers.
Coffee is from Campos, and non-caffeinated needs are met with a selection of teas from Serendipitea including organic chamomile with apple and mango, and a blood orange fruit tisane.
