Capeside Coffee is tiny – just under five square metres. The original owners initially turned the site down before taking a trip to New York and realising that cafes don’t need an extensive menu to be great. And small spaces can work if the offering and fit-out are clever and speak for themselves.

Capeside has one floating Tasmanian-oak counter and just one round communal table. Both sit on top of a polished concrete floor.

White coffee is by Seven Seeds; and black and filter by Wood and Co. There's no kitchen, but there’s muesli in the morning, and cakes and pastries all day. For lunch there’s sandwiches: one with roast-vegetable and goat’s-cheese, and one with grandmother’s ham, cheddar, homemade pickles and mustard.
