Upon entering Our Kitchenette, the name instantly makes sense. Chef and co-owner Jenna Abbruzzese is visible from anywhere in the 20-seat cafe, which consists of an equally sized open kitchen and dining room. Abbruzzese busily crafts modern takes on classic fare while bantering and laughing with co-owner Megan Griffey and their loyal customers.
Griffey and Abbruzzese are Melbourne hospitality veterans with a simple goal: exceptionally done comfort food. Both have worked overseas in venues ranging from lemonade stand to five-star hotel. They’ve seen what works, and are devoted to quality and accessibility over trend. It’s by design that there’s no blond wood or single-origin filter coffee in sight.
Abbruzzese’s experience at Rumi in Brunswick and her Italian heritage subtly influence every dish, such as the buttery roast mushrooms and white polenta with herbs from her home garden. Schnitzel sandwiches, 5 & Dime bagels and Middle Eastern salads fill a display fridge for dining in or quick takeaway.
Don’t leave without a slice of Griffey’s mum’s carrot cake or pecan pie – these secret generational recipes aren’t available anywhere else.
