Under original owners Nolan Hirte (Proud Mary) and Nathan Toleman (Top Paddock and The Kettle Black), Liar Liar pioneered specialty coffee in Hawthorn. To this day it remains a hub for coffee enthusiasts, despite a change in owners.
The Coffee Culture Communication Group is in the business of buying established cafes. It took over Liar Liar in 2015, adding it to a portfolio that includes Einstein’s 251, Prospect Espresso and Loco Coffee.
Espresso is made on a Synesso Hydra using beans from Proud Mary. It’s just one option on the extensive drinks list, which also offers cold-drip and pour-over coffee, matcha lattes and Mörk hot chocolate.
On the menu you’ll find an assortment of granolas and fruits; the usual egg and toast dishes with customisable sides; and more special dishes, such as ricotta hotcakes. There’s also a selection of housemade treats for those after a sugar hit.
The interior is a cosy hideaway, with no natural light other than that from the shopfront. On weekends it buzzes, with people packed in at counters along the windows and sharing tables inside. It’s convivial and fun.
