Few cafes can match Hawthorn Common’s dedication to doing things in-house. It roasts its own coffee. It grows its own herbs. It mills its own flour and bakes its own bread. The kitchen even cultures yoghurt and preserves fruit and vegetables. Hawthorn Common is also conscious of waste and sends all its compost to City Harvest, rather than to landfill.

The plates return to the kitchen empty anyway, thanks to chef Matt Barlow (ex-Two Birds One Stone, Cecconi’s). His wide-ranging menu always includes a handful of inventive sweet options (see: pavlova pancakes) alongside the usual egg, avocado and toast dishes.

Lunch covers burgers, salads and sandwiches, which you can pair with a beer or wine from the tight list. Unusually for a cafe, Hawthorn Common takes breakfast and lunch bookings every day of the week, provided your group is five or more.

The spacious room is overlooked by black-and-white portraits of regular customers and the tradesmen who helped build the cafe.
