Queen Elizabeth II is Australia’s official head of state. That has very little bearing on how we live our lives day-to-day, with a couple of exceptions. The most noteworthy? The Queen’s Birthday public holiday, which falls on June 10 this year. The Queen’s actual birthday is in April, but because of how many public holidays there are around then, most Commonwealth states officially celebrate her birthday on a different date that’s better suited to a day off.
In every Australian state except for Queensland and Western Australia, the Queen’s Birthday falls on the second Monday of June. Recently, it’s felt like every other weekend has been a long one, but that won’t be the case much longer: in Melbourne, this is our last public holiday until the Grand Final weekend in September, so make it count. Here are all of the restaurants, bars and cafes staying open to help you make the most of the holiday.
