Melbourne’s restaurants, cafes and bars are closed to dine-in customers until September 2. We’ve reopened this live list for lockdown 6.0, so you can order takeaway and support your favourites.

As always we’ll continue updating this list daily, all throughout lockdown – however long that might be. This is the definitive guide to who’s selling what, from heat-and-serve meals to pre-mixed cocktails.

If you have concerns about visiting businesses or public spaces, or questions about self-isolation, vaccination or coronavirus testing, check out the latest updates from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Shop Ramen’s Preston kitchen is also at full pelt. You can pick up your order from this location too.

143 Plenty Road, Preston

Hakata Gensuke Hawthorn

This is one of several Hakata Gensuke outposts, but it has an exclusive ramen the others don’t: aka tonkotsu, a mixture of pork broth and spicy cod roe paste. It’s worth a go. Cod roe pops up elsewhere on the menu too, as it’s a staple ingredient in ramens from the Hakata ward of Fukuoka on Japan’s southernmost island. Order here. Delivery is also available through the major platforms.

Tenancy 4 860/862 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn

Hakata Gensuke Carlton

Carlton’s Hakata Gensuke outlet also has its own specialty: shoyu ramen, which involves a tonkotsu broth delicately blended with soy sauce. Order pick-up here. As at Hawthorn, this Hakata is on all of the big delivery apps.

126 Lygon Street, Carlton

Its locations may be closed this time around, but Shujinko lives on in pop-up form on Elizabeth Street. Order ready-made or kit versions of Shujinko’s signature ramens, or spring for one of the jazzy lockdown specials involving either truffle or lobster. You can endlessly customise these with extras, too – just be sure to add some chicken karaage or gyoza on the side.

225 Russell Street, Melbourne

Shyun Ramen Bar

In addition to a great range of classic ramen, Shyun Ramen Bar has a substantial line-up of dry-sauce ramens – noodles and toppings minus the broth, which resemble pasta dishes somewhat. Check the menu and call (03) 8394 5971 for pick-up orders. If you’re after delivery, Shyun is on all the major platforms.

73 Koornang Road, Carnegie

Wabi Sabi Salon

This Smith Street diner has a versatile menu of Japanese classics – from katsu curries to bento boxes – but the ramen is particularly worthwhile. There are two options available (a shoyu style and a tan tan men), both of which can be made vegetarian. The salon is jumping on the cook-at-home format with its own kits.

Neko Neko

Further down Smith Street, Neko Neko also has an unusual ramen roster. Ramen traditionally relies on the collagen in boiled animal bones to provide the thick creaminess for its broth. But in recent years, vegan ramen has made great strides towards replicating that richness using plant-based products. All-vegan diner Neko Neko is at the forefront of that push in Melbourne. Its tan tan, shoyu and spicy tofu options are excellent in their own right, regardless of whether or not you’re vegan. Delivery available through the major platforms or pickup from the restaurant.

83 Smith Street, Fitzroy

Tamura Sake Bar

Also in Fitzroy, Gertrude Street’s Tamura Sake Bar has once again flipped the switch and put together a lockdown menu. In addition to Teishoku and a luxe uni-starring bento box, there’s a lone ramen and a soupless mazesoba on offer. See the menu here. To order, call (03) 9417 1992 or text your order to 0488 210 011. Pick-up from the bar or delivery on the major platforms.

43 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy

Mr Ramen San

“Keep calm, eat ramen” is this MidCity noodle joint’s calling card – a fine prescription even at the best of times. Known for creamy, Hakata-style ramen, Mr Ramen San is doing a parred-back selection for takeaway and delivery. Its partnered with all the major delivery apps, but it’s also doing its own rounds for no extra charge. Find your suburb in the weekly delivery roster here.

Frankie's Tortas and Tacos

This taco and torta (sandwich) stand in Collingwood is tailor-made for lockdown. Step up for al pastor (pork) carved straight from the spit, or breaded beef milanesa or asada mushroom grilled to order. There are a couple of tables to eat at, or you can whisk your lunch away.

384 Smith Street, Collingwood

This taqueria and bottle shop has steadily expanded its takeaway offering since lockdowns started in last year. The burritos and churros are particular highlights. And while you’re at, be sure to order some horchata to drink. Order here.

Los Hermanos Mexican Taqueria

The tacos and gorditas here are the real deal. Owner Bruno Carreto was born in Mexico and did a stint in a taqueria there before opening Los Hermanos. Be sure to add on some churros for dessert. Order here for pick-up, or you can find Los Hermanos on most major delivery platforms.

339 Victoria Street, Brunswick

Radio Mexico

A lot of Radio Mexico’s charm comes from its location, it’s just off St Kilda beach. But this taqueria’s popular pivot to the takeaway era has proved that it hasn’t been coasting by on its looks. There’s build-your-own taco sets, cook-at-home meals (including a range of slow-cooked meats) and of course, Margaritas. We’d go for the one litre flagon. It’s $60, and pours six Margaritas. That’s a good deal.

11-13 Carlisle Street, St Kilda

Hello José

This West Melbourne taqueria recently reopened for lockdown take-two with its entire menu available. The multifarious taco menu includes Baja-style battered-fish tacos, carnitas and chicken tinga. Plus, nachos, hot wings, cocktails and more. To order, call (03) 9326 3934 or find Hello Jose on Uber Eats.

85 Peel Street, West Melbourne

Village Cantina

Who needs Taco Tuesday when you can have Burrito Thursday and Nacho Sunday? Sure, they don’t roll of the tongue as well, but the deals speak for themselves. At Village, a big bowl of nachos is $10 on Sundays. The Thursday deal is even better: two burritos for $20 (they’re also very large). It’s backed up by a menu filled with favourites such as churros, croquetas, and plenty of tacos. Takeaway is available locally, delivery via Deliveroo.

30 Ballarat Street, Yarraville

El Sabor

This small restaurant in North Melbourne is the offshoot of El Cielo one of Melbourne’s biggest handmade tortilla players. There’s a great line-up of classic dishes on the menu, from chilaquiles (strips of fried corn tortillas and served with salsa) and enfrijoladas (like enchiladas, but with a black bean sauce) to black beans soup. There’s a robust taco roster too, and the “to share” options are good value. You can find El Sabor on Uber Eats, visit the website to order.

500 Victoria St, North Melbourne

The Black Toro

The menu here isn’t especially authentic – e.g. a fried chicken torta – but it’s not thoughtless fusion, either. Order here for creative spins on quesadillas, tacos and achiote chicken.

79 Kingsway, Glen Waverley

Danny’s is the second oldest burger shop in Melbourne, after Andrew’s. But it’s kept up with the times – these old-school fish’n’chipper-style burgs are available on Deliveroo. If you live nearby, it’s open for pick-up, too.
