“I like music and I think desserts are always fun, so for me, eating desserts to music is just the proper way to do it,” says Adriano Zumbo of his new weekend dessert bar, to take over South Yarra’s Fancy Nance from this Friday. “Obviously a lot of dessert places have music, but I think the DJ will create a different atmosphere and hopefully people will hang around for a few drinks and a boogie.”
Zumbo and Fancy Nance head chef, Daniel Texter (former executive pastry chef of Noma) will change the menu often. A current favourite of Zumbo’s is the lemon tart with buttermilk and thyme ice cream. “I like desserts that are refreshing and the thyme adds an interesting element,” says Zumbo.
You can choose between a three ($40) or five-course ($60) set menu, or for a more casual evening, select a dessert or two from the à-la-carte offering. There’ll be a cocktail menu too.
Zumbo Dessert Bar will also house a fairy-floss, popcorn and soft-serve machine.
“I’ve always been a lover of soft serves,” says Zumbo, who admits he could very comfortably eat two or three bowls of soft serve in one sitting. “That’s just what makes me happy.”
