At Workshop Specialty Coffee, you’ll find washed timber tables – both communal and individual – a white tiled bar façade, low hanging lights and copper tones.

Indeed, Workshop brings the popular Nordic style adopted by inner city cafes to the suburbs, making it an inviting, spacious hang out for families with prams, couples, large groups and those after a quick coffee before they hop on the train to work.

“On Glen Huntly Road, if you look toward Elsternwick there are so many great places to get coffee, but there just isn’t much around us. We’ve opened to give locals more choice and to teach them about coffee, hence the name Workshop,” explains Nolan Taing, who makes up of one third of the trio of brothers behind the cafe.

The coffee is sourced from Coffee Cartel Roasters and given that the Taing brothers are from good coffee-brewing stock (their parents own Oak Room Cafe in Ashburton), you can expect a great cup.

A great food offering is also on the cards. Workshop’s head chef Harry Hajisava has spent several years working overseas at Michelin Star restaurants, as well as with the likes of Michel Roux, whose influence stars on the menu.

“Our menu is about trying to push exciting meals at a lower price. We’ll try to be a little daring in terms of what we do, while sourcing products locally,” says Nolan.

As a result, the menu might feature Michel Roux’s Caribbean crab salad with avocado, tomato mousse and toast, or even crumbed lambs brains. Indeed, this certainly isn’t your usual cafe fare.

Workshop is exactly as its name connotes – a learning experience that aims to introduce people to specialty coffee in a friendly way and re-define what cafe food embodies.
