You’d be forgiven for thinking Andrew McConnell never sleeps. The chef and restaurateur’s next project has been two years in the making and marks the final touch to the Builders Arms Hotel.

The Bowery Room will be the Builders’ main event space, located on the second floor of the historic pub with views onto its courtyard and leafy Gore Street.

Designed by Projects of Imagination, which has been on board throughout the restoration of the Builders Arms and also had a hand in Supernormal, the light-filled space is large enough to accommodate 70 guests for a seated event or 90 for cocktails.

Aesthetically, Bowery Room marks the midpoint between the Builders Arms’ other spaces, combining the refined warmth of the pub with the elegance of Moon Under Water. Think dark-stained floors and white walls offset by exposed areas of the original brickwork.

Behind a striking, green-tiled bench that runs the length of the space’s far wall, there is a full bar with a La Marzocco coffee machine and an open kitchen, allowing the Bowery Room to be a completely independent venue. Builders Arms manager Oliver Shorthouse says this was an important feature in the design of the room and makes it quite unique when compared with other event spaces.

The Bowery Room offers a range of simple, perfectly executed food (separate from the Builders and Moon Under Water offerings), starting from $35 per person for canapés and $65 per person for a seated banquet. The menu, designed by McConnell and Builders chef Josh Murphy, is peppered with European influences, such as the Wagyu bresaola from northern Italy or the decidedly English dessert of rhubarb and strawberry salad served with custard ice cream. There’s also an option for freshly shucked oysters, either Pacific or Moonlight Flat, a McConnell signature.

Of course, the other important thing at any event is the drinks. Here, the Bowery Room also excels, with sommelier Campbell Burton’s full wine list from Moon Under Water available.

Shorthouse says the Bowery Room will open by the start of November, just in time for your work Christmas party.
