Most of us probably dine out, grab a take away meal or buy a cup of coffee (or two) a few times a week, and who can blame us with the bounty that is on offer in Melbourne.

This month, StreetSmart, a charity organisation that sets out to support the homeless around Australia, asks diners to spare some change for the less fortunate among us, during their annual DineSmart event.

Now in its ninth year, DineSmart helps raise funds for the homeless by asking diners to donate just $2 on their table bill when they dine out at participating restaurants. This year there are 72 participating restaurants in Melbourne alone. Cutler & Co, Fitzrovia and Golden Fields are just some of our favourite eateries that have chosen to join the charity campaign. Mamasita, Chin Chin and Bar Idda have also joined the cause and will be asking diners to throw in some change on their share plates.

Coffee drinkers can also pitch in when you get your next dose of caffeine at Pope Joan, Birdman Eating, Three Bags Full and a number of other cafes around town.

DineSmart 2011 will kick off with Big Dine Out on Monday November 14, where event organisers are looking to get the event started with a big bang. So catch-up with friends, plan a romantic night out and enjoy dining smart, for a good cause.

DineSmart launches with the Big Dine Out on Monday November 14. The event will run until December 24.
