The city might have just been flooded with the tasty mayhem of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, but those watching it recede into the distance need not feel bereft quite yet. There’s still a hidden serenity in Fed Square if you care to peek.

Perched on the outskirts of Beer DeLuxe you’ll find bamboo walls enclosing the Secret Japanese Beer Garden of Shinobi (or Ninja). It’s been designed by Nami Kano and Olivia Fielding and features beers not yet seen in Australia. Try the surprising Hitachino Nest red rice ale, with its distinctive pink colour, or the Espresso stout from the same guys (yes it’s flavoured with coffee). The Temple Soba ale draught (made with buckwheat from Victoria) is also causing a stir.

Matched with Otsumami, or beer food, it’s an exciting beer experience and there’s still a chance to catch it over the next few days.

So why not lose yourself in the temporary intimacy of the pop-up space and believe for just a moment that you’re a thousand miles away from the trams rumbling by on the other-side of the partition. Kanpai.
