Owners of Richmond’s Royal Saxon, Paul Olynyk and Julian Gerner (also of Melbourne Pub Group), have secured a prize position on Sorrento’s esplanade. Morgan’s Beach Shack will open in what was Morgan’s Bar and before that the Sorrento Seafood Tavern, with a focus on casual seaside dining.
Gerner says the menu will take its cues from “Baja-style” cuisine, a Californian take on Mexican, and will also feature shoreline favourites, fish and chips and burgers.
“We want it to be fun, fresh and flavorsome,” Gerner says. “The idea behind the venue is a beach shack on the water, which people can enjoy casual dining, day drinking and fun in the sun.”
Frozen margaritas will keep beachgoers cool at the bar, as will a range of Mornington Peninsula wines and a combination of local and Mexican beers.
On Monday nights, those who are handy with a racket can compete in the weekly table tennis tournament, held on Beach Shack’s outdoor table tennis court. There will be prizes for best player and best dressed – think Andre Agassi circa 1990.
