Award-winning Fitzroy North bistro and bottle shop, The Recreation has something special for you this summer: deluxe picnic hampers.

Located just down the road from one of Melbourne’s best picnic spots – the 24-hectare Edinburgh Gardens – it only made sense for The Recreation to throw down a rug.

Beginning this Saturday, $65 will get you a hamper for two including pork and pistachio terrine; chicken-liver parfait; piccali and cornichons; free-range barbequed Milwa chicken; and potato salad.

The vegetarian option includes barbequed vegetables, mixed grains and beans with tahini dressing, and spätzle(egg noodles) with cavolo nero (kale), mushrooms and reblochon (a soft washed-rind cheese) sauce.

Both come with bread and butter; a mixed-leaf salad; Tomme d'Abondance cheese; croutons; and sticky-date pudding. A bottle of French, Spanish or Australian wine can be purchased to-go from the bottle shop.

While nearby Edinburgh Gardens does allow safe consumption of alcohol, glassware is banned, so plan ahead. The park is dog-friendly with leashed and unleashed zones for your pooch if you're in need of a little extra company.

The Recreation is currently working with UberEats, so hampers and alcohol will soon be available for delivery.

Hampers are on sale Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 9pm by calling ahead or ordering in-store.
