Among the fruit and vegetable stalls of the Queen Victoria Market, the Social Kitchen has arrived.
Roaming the world since 2011, the purpose-built, six-station kitchen will be offering hands-on cooking classes for the next six months, including the opportunity to learn from top chefs and even shop the QV Market for fresh ingredients before touching the cook top.
The Melbourne pop-up is a collaboration between Fisher & Paykel (which is providing the hardware) and Peter Rowland Catering (which is providing the know-how), and is divided into Market Day Classes, taken by Peter Rowland chefs and Masterclasses which will feature some of the city’s most exciting culinary names, including Shane Delia of Maha, Scott Pickett of Estelle, Darren Purchese of Burch & Purchese Sweet Studio and Benjamin Cooper of Chin Chin. Peter Rowland’s 26-week cooking program includes three two-and-a-half hour classes per day on Tuesdays and Thursday to Sundays. The schedule includes classes on Americana cooking, Vietnamese street food and how to nail your Christmas feast.
On market days, lucky participants will be taken for a tour and a shop through the QV Market, with emphasis on using the freshest and most local ingredients available.
Compared to an average night’s cooking, this is a first-class experience, and aside from the obvious perks of learning from a pro, you can enjoy the fruits of your cooking without having to lift a finger during the clean-up.
If you’re used to cooking with a drink in hand, you’ll be glad to hear there’s a glass of sparkling wine upon arrival (or a cup of coffee for the morning sessions), plus all students will leave with a goodie bag and a Social Kitchen apron.
For those searching for an alternative to the traditional office Christmas party, this could just be it.
The Social Kitchen’s Market Day Classes are $135 and Masterclasses $275. Bookings can be made here.
