Since its inception some nine years ago, art gallery and auction house Mossgreen has championed the work of their impressive stable of contemporary Australian artists, continually growing and improving the business. Since merging with industry powerhouse Charles Leski earlier this year, Mossgreen has continued this trend, relocating to a larger space in Armadale previously occupied by Sotheby’s) and delving into hospitality with the introduction of their new Mossgreen Tearooms, in partnership with Peter Rowland Gold.

In an era where each burgeoning new cafe is more considered and refined than the last, the throwback charm and romantic prettiness of the Mossgreen Tearooms is a welcome new face on the scene. Says co-founder Amanda Swanson of the new cafe, “we wanted something that harks back to the past but maintains a contemporary feel.”

Here the plates may be classic Wedgewood and the tablecloths pristine linen, but the stark white walls are adorned with an ever-changing array of art exhibitions, ensuring there’s more to look at with your breakfast than your usual Sunday papers. Menus are illustrated by popular Australian artist Kate Bergin; her fanciful animal sketches the perfect accoutrement to the sophisticated Mad Hatter Tea Party vibe the creative team has shaped.

While the Tearooms offer European-style breakfast and lunch fare, the real drawcard here is its high tea spread. Sit back and enjoy a selection of finger sandwiches, scones and petit fours; and wash it all down with tea, coffee, or some bubbles.
