In January, Footscray’s much-loved Olympic Doughnuts closed after more than 40 years.

But a fan of the institution plans to open a doughnut store in the same location, according to the Herald Sun.

Russell Karim, the new leaseholder, knew the former owner Nick Tsiligiris (he used to buy the doughnuts on his way to university), and plans to hire former Olympic Doughnuts staff.

Karim owns Yarraville cafe Dad and Dave’s.

The new shop – which is yet to be given a name – is expected to open in a few weeks.

The Tsigiliris family “said they wished the new leaseholder well but denied rumours that the doughnut recipe had been sold on”, the Herald Sun reported.

Tsiligiris, a Greek immigrant who moved to Australia after the Second World War, opened his hot-jam-doughnut truck at Footscray Station in 1979. The shop had been temporarily shut since mid-2016 due to Tsiligiris’s ill health.
